Commercial acoustic panels work well, but they’re not cheap, and outfitting an entire room with them can run into the thousands of dollars. The good news is that the core technology behind most commercial panels — rigid fibreglass or mineral wool wrapped in acoustically transparent fabric — is straightforward to replicate at home with basic woodworking tools, usually for somewhere between a third and a half of retail cost per panel.

This guide walks through a standard 2-inch, 2×4-foot panel build, the most common size and depth for first-reflection and general room treatment.

What You’ll Need

Core materials: rigid fibreglass insulation boards (Owens Corning 703 or 705, or mineral wool equivalent), 2 inches thick; acoustically transparent fabric; 1×4 or 1×3 pine or poplar boards for the frame; wood glue and pocket screws or a staple gun; and picture-hanging wire or French cleats for mounting.

Tools: miter saw or circular saw with a guide, staple gun, tape measure and square, utility knife, and a drill/driver.

Safety note: rigid fibreglass insulation sheds fine particles that irritate skin and lungs. Wear gloves, a dust mask, and long sleeves while cutting and handling it, and work in a ventilated space.

Step 1: Decide on Panel Size and Depth

2×4 feet at 2 inches thick is the standard workhorse size for first-reflection points and general wall treatment. If you’re specifically targeting bass, build deeper (4 inches or more) and prioritize corner placement instead of flat wall mounting.

Step 2: Build the Frame

Cut your 1×4 boards into two pairs — two at 48 inches and two at 21 inches — and join the corners with pocket screws and wood glue for a strong, square frame. Check the frame is square by measuring both diagonals — they should match.

Step 3: Cut the Insulation to Fit

Measure the inside dimensions of your frame and cut the rigid fibreglass board to match, using a long knife and a straightedge. Cut slightly oversized rather than undersized — a snug fit inside the frame holds the insulation in place without needing adhesive.

Step 4: Wrap the Fabric

Lay your fabric out on the floor, place the frame insulation-side down on top, and pull the fabric taut around the back of the frame, stapling as you go. Work from the center of each side outward, alternating sides to maintain even tension. Fold and miter the corners neatly, then trim excess fabric close to the staple line.

Step 5: Add Mounting Hardware

For lightweight panels, D-rings and picture wire combined with wall anchors are sufficient. For a cleaner, removable solution, French cleats let you hang and unhang panels without repeated wall damage.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using foam instead of rigid fibreglass or mineral wool — foam is far less effective at absorbing lower and mid frequencies despite looking similar in marketing photos.
  • Skipping the frame and gluing insulation directly to the wall — this makes panels impossible to move and gives worse acoustic performance than a properly framed, air-gapped panel.
  • Choosing decorative fabric with a tight weave — if you can’t comfortably blow through it, it’s blocking too much high-frequency energy from reaching the insulation.
  • Mounting panels flush against the wall with no air gap — leaving a 1 to 2 inch air gap meaningfully improves low-mid absorption at essentially no extra cost.

Where to Put Your Finished Panels

Once you’ve built a batch, prioritize placement using the mirror trick — side walls, ceiling, and desk-level reflection points typically give the biggest audible improvement for this style of panel, with corner bass traps handling the low end.
