
Acoustic panels only work if they’re placed where sound is actually hitting the walls on its way to your ears. Buy a stack of panels and mount them wherever looks symmetrical or convenient, and you can end up with a room that looks treated but sounds barely different. The good news is that finding the exact spots that matter takes about ten minutes and costs nothing — all you need is a mirror.
What a First Reflection Point Actually Is
When sound leaves your monitor, some of it travels directly to your ears — that’s the signal you want to hear. But a significant portion also bounces off the nearest side wall, the ceiling, and your desk surface before reaching your ears a few milliseconds later. Because that reflected sound is delayed and combined with the direct signal, it causes comb filtering — a repeating pattern of frequency cancellation and reinforcement that colors everything you hear at the mix position.
The first reflection point is simply the spot on the wall, ceiling, or desk where that early reflection is bouncing off on its way to your ears. Treating that exact spot with an absorptive panel removes or significantly reduces the reflection before it reaches you.
The Mirror Trick
- Sit in your normal mixing position, at the height and distance you’d actually be working from.
- Have someone else slide a small mirror along the side wall, moving it slowly from roughly speaker height down toward desk height, staying close to the wall surface.
- Watch the mirror as it moves. The moment you can see the reflection of your monitor speaker in the mirror, that exact spot is a first reflection point.
- Mark that spot with painter’s tape and repeat for the other side wall, using the opposite monitor.
- Repeat on the ceiling, having your helper slide the mirror across the ceiling between you and your monitors.
- Check the desk surface too if you’re working on a reflective or glossy desk.
If you don’t have anyone to help hold the mirror, a lightweight hand mirror taped to a yardstick or dowel works as a one-person substitute.
What to Do Once You’ve Found Them
Each first reflection point should get an absorptive panel roughly centered on that exact spot. You need four to six panels total for a typical setup: two side-wall points, one ceiling point, and optionally desk-level treatment if your desk surface is highly reflective.
First reflection panels address the mid-to-high frequency comb filtering problem specifically — they won’t meaningfully touch bass buildup in room corners, which requires separate, deeper bass trapping. Most well-treated rooms need both.
A Few Practical Notes
- Redo the mirror test if you change your speaker or seating position — first reflection points move whenever your monitors or chair move.
- Don’t skip the ceiling. It’s the most commonly forgotten reflection point, and the vertical reflection path is just as damaging to imaging and clarity as the side walls.
- Symmetry matters more than it might seem. If your room forces an asymmetrical setup, treat both sides independently based on where the mirror actually shows a reflection.

First reflection treatment is typically the second priority after bass trapping in a proper room treatment plan, and the two together account for most of the audible improvement a home studio owner will notice.
