
Room EQ Wizard is the tool that turns “I think my room sounds off” into an actual, measurable answer.
Everything we’ve covered in this series so far — bass traps, first reflection points, diffusion — is based on identifying problems by ear and by general room-acoustics principles. That gets you most of the way there. But if you want to actually see what your room is doing to your sound, Room EQ Wizard (REW) is the standard free tool for the job, and it’s what many professional acousticians use as a starting point too.
What You’ll Need
A computer running REW (free, for Windows, Mac, or Linux), a calibrated measurement microphone such as a USB measurement mic, a mic stand positioned at your actual mix position at ear height, and your studio monitors already connected and working normally. A basic USB measurement mic in the $80 to $150 range is more than sufficient for home studio room analysis.
Step 1: Install REW
Download REW from the official Room EQ Wizard website and run the installer for your operating system. It’s free, with an optional donation to the developer.
Step 2: Connect and Configure Your Measurement Microphone
Plug in your USB measurement microphone and let your OS recognize it as an audio input device. In REW, go to Preferences then Soundcard and select your measurement mic as the input device, and your regular audio interface as the output device. If your mic came with a calibration file, load it under Preferences then Mic/Meter so REW corrects for your specific microphone’s response curve.
Step 3: Set Your Output Levels
Before measuring, play some music through your monitors and set a comfortable, consistent listening level — loud enough for a clean signal-to-noise ratio, not so loud that it’s uncomfortable.
Step 4: Position the Microphone
Mount your measurement mic at your exact mix position, at ear height, pointing straight up. This captures the sound field the way your ears actually experience it, reflections and all.
Step 5: Run Your First Measurement
In REW, go to the Measure tab and select a sine sweep, REW’s default and most reliable measurement type for room analysis. Run it once per monitor individually first, then optionally run a combined measurement with both monitors playing together. Click Start Measuring, and REW will play a rising sine tone through your monitor and generate a frequency response graph.
Reading Your First Graph
Large peaks and dips in the bass range below roughly 300Hz almost always indicate room modes — the same standing wave problems covered in our bass trapping guide. A generally smooth response through the midrange is a good sign; jagged variation in the 1 to 4kHz range often points to early reflection comb filtering.
Using REW Results to Guide Treatment (Not Replace It)
REW tells you where your room has problems with useful precision. It does not fix those problems on its own; digital room correction EQ can help smooth some issues but can’t undo the physics of reflections and modal buildup the way physical treatment can. A practical workflow: measure before treatment, treat the highest-priority problems first, then re-measure to confirm the improvement.
A Note on Expectations
Your first REW graph from an untreated room can be a little alarming — most home studios show dramatic peaks and dips. This is completely normal. Don’t chase a perfectly flat line; even professionally treated commercial studios show some variation. The goal is reducing the severity of the worst peaks and dips, not achieving textbook perfection.
