How to Record Electric Guitar at Home: Amps, DI, and Cab Sims

Recording electric guitar at home presents a challenge that acoustic guitar recording doesn’t: the electric guitar is almost always inseparable from its amplifier. The sound you hear from an electric guitar is the sound of a pickup signal going through a particular amplifier, speaker cabinet, and microphone — and capturing that chain at home, where running an amp at useful volumes isn’t always practical, requires some creative solutions. This guide covers all the main approaches, from traditional miking to modern amp simulation.

The Four Main Approaches

There are four ways to record electric guitar at home, each with different trade-offs of authenticity, convenience, volume, and cost:

  • Microphone a real amp — the traditional approach, best results, requires volume
  • Direct input (DI) with amp simulation plugin — convenient, silent, flexible, requires good plugin
  • Amp with a load box — real amp sound at silent volumes, more expensive
  • Modelling amp or multi-effects — self-contained hardware solution

Miking a Real Amp

When volume permits, a microphone in front of a real guitar amplifier produces the most authentic electric guitar recording. The industry standard microphone for this is the Shure SM57 — a dynamic microphone designed for exactly this application. Its presence peak at around 5kHz adds definition and cut that helps guitar sit in a mix, and its ability to handle high sound pressure levels means it can sit right up against the speaker grill without distortion.

Placement is everything with guitar amp miking. The standard starting position: SM57 positioned perpendicular to the speaker cone, about 2–5cm from the grill, aimed at the point where the cone meets the dust cap (the centre/edge boundary). This position captures the full frequency range of the speaker. Moving toward the exact centre increases treble and harshness; moving toward the edge of the cone reduces treble and adds warmth. Small movements — even a centimetre — produce audible differences. Find the position that sounds right for the tone you want before committing to a take.

A second microphone — a large-diaphragm condenser positioned 30–60cm back from the amp — adds room ambience and a sense of space. Blend a small amount of this room mic with the close SM57 to add depth. Check phase between the two mics: with both playing together, if the sound becomes thin or hollow, flip the polarity on one channel.

DI Recording with Amp Simulation

Plugging the guitar direct into your audio interface (via the high-impedance instrument input) and processing with an amp simulation plugin is the most practical solution for home recording where volume is a constraint. The guitar signal is captured as a clean DI track, and the amp simulation runs in the DAW as a plugin, recreating the amp and cabinet sound digitally.

The quality of amp simulation plugins has improved dramatically over the past decade. Neural DSP’s plugins (Archetype series, Fortin series) are widely considered the best-sounding amp sims available, with neural network processing trained on real hardware. Line 6’s Helix Native brings their hardware modelling to a plugin format. IK Multimedia AmpliTube 5 offers a vast library of modelled amps. And the free options — Neural DSP’s Fortin Nameless and Archetype Plini free versions, plus the included amp sims in many DAWs — are genuinely usable for real recordings.

The key advantage of DI recording: the performance is captured cleanly and the amp sound can be changed after the fact. Record the DI track, then audition different amp sims and cabinet impulse responses until the tone is right — without re-recording the performance. This non-destructive approach is a significant creative advantage over committing to a miked amp sound during the session.

Impulse Responses: The Key to Convincing Cab Simulation

An impulse response (IR) is a measurement of the acoustic fingerprint of a specific speaker cabinet and microphone combination — captured by playing a test signal through the real hardware and recording the result. Loading an IR into a convolution reverb or dedicated IR loader in your DAW applies the measured acoustic character of that real cabinet and microphone combination to your signal.

IR-based cabinet simulation is consistently more convincing than algorithmically modelled cabinets. The best free IR libraries — Celestion’s free impulse responses, the 3 Sigma Audio library, and the Ownhammer collection — cover everything from vintage 4×12 Marshall stacks to boutique open-back combo cabs. Using a quality IR with a good amp sim produces results that are indistinguishable from a miked cabinet in many contexts.

Load Boxes: Real Amp, Silent Recording

A reactive load box sits between the amplifier’s speaker output and a dummy load (replacing the speaker), allowing the amp to be driven at full power — with all the harmonic character that comes from a pushed output transformer and power stage — without producing any sound. The signal is then taken from the load box’s line output and processed with cabinet IRs in the DAW.

The Universal Audio OX Amp Top Box and the Torpedo Captor X are the most widely used reactive load boxes. They’re expensive — typically $400–$700 — but for players who own real valve amplifiers and want to capture their sound without running them at stage volume, they’re the only way to get genuine power stage saturation in a silent recording environment.

Getting the Guitar Tone Right Before Recording

Regardless of recording method, the guitar’s own setup significantly affects the recorded sound. Fresh strings (changed within the last week for most recording sessions) produce brighter, more consistent tone. String action affects playability and intonation — high action causes the guitar to go sharp as you fret harder. Intonation should be checked before any session where tuning accuracy matters. And the guitar’s volume and tone controls, often overlooked, are useful tone-shaping tools: rolling the tone control back slightly on a Stratocaster produces a warmer, more vintage sound; adjusting the pickup height changes the pickup’s sensitivity and attack character.
